Robbo's 'How to score in Match Play' Lesson

Match Play - With the early rounds of match play upon us, and after hearing of some interesting scoring processes, I thought I would help players with how to score match play.

  1. I have printed special cards with the MATCH PLAY INDEX. This index is universal upon all courses. Note - we don’t use the regular index in Match Play. These cards are kept on top of the Suggestions Box, under the notice board in the clubhouse.
  2. On the card, (see across), you can see Smith’s daily handicap on the Blue course is 4. Rahm’s daily handicap is 14.
  3. In the match there is a difference of 10 shots. (14-4 = 10)
  4. Therefore Smith will give Rahm 1 shot on the holes that have a match index of 1-10.
  5. To look where the first shot is given, look on the Match Index and you will see that Index 1 is hole 8.
  6. The second shot is given on hole 12. The 3rd shot on hole 4, etc.
  7. In their match you can see on Hole 1, no shots are given so it’s off the stick.
  8. Smith makes a 4, which beats Rahms 5. Smith goes 1 up.

Rule of the Week

Provisional Ball

18.3b
Announcing Play of Provisional Ball

Before the stroke is made, the player must announce to someone that they are going to play a provisional ball:

  • It is not enough for the player only to say that they are playing another ball or are playing again.
  • The player must use the word “provisional” or otherwise clearly indicate that they are playing the ball provisionally under Rule 18.3.

If the player does not announce to someone (even if they intended to play a provisional ball) and plays a ball from where the previous stroke was made, that ball is the player’s ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance (see Rule 18.1). But if there is no one nearby to hear the player’s announcement, the player may play the provisional ball and then inform someone of their actions when possible to do so.
